The Story of Sipping Tusker - Gor Mahia vs Tusker FC

History
Ever since Tusker FC established themselves as a top flight team in 1970 (then known as Kenya Breweries), their ambition was always to establish themselves as the top footballing team in Kenya. Their ambition was evident as they raided Abaluhya (now AFC Leopards) of some of their top players such as Charles Makunda and Livingstone Madegwa as well as snatching the likes of Peter Odera and Elly Adero from Gor Mahia. The media quickly began talking about the Big 3 to refer to them together with Gor Mahia and Abaluhya, albeit the fact that they were yet to win any game notwithstanding.  Since then, football matches between Tusker and Gor Mahia have been tightly contested and this tie is probably the second biggest tie in the country after Gor Mahia vs AFC Leopards – at least it was so in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Today, ahead of the Top 8 tie between Gor Mahia and Tusker,  I want to reflect on the history of the this tie and look at some of the significant numbers. Although I have records dating back to the first competitive tie between the two teams in 1970, I do not take into account the period between 2004 to 2006 when the league was marred in chaos. Hopefully I will be able to get the records straight for this period.

The first competitive match between the two took place on 2nd May 1970 in a Nairobi Provincial League encounter which ended in a 1-1 draw. Sadly I don’t have on record who scored on this day. Both teams would later qualify for the National League playoff and would meet again in the first leg with the Brewers beating Gor Mahia 3-1, the lone K’Ogalo goal being netted by Fred Siranga. As the government dissolved the FA that year, the league was thrown in chaos and would only resume in early 1971. After Abaluhya were declared champions once they had an insurmountable lead, it seems as if teams were no longer interested in the league and I cannot find records of the return leg.
The next time these two met would be in early 1972, again in the Nairobi Provincial League. This game was to be remembered as the game that has probably produced the fasted goal in Kenyan football. Straight from kick off, William Ouma Chege noticing that the Breweries keeper was yet to settle and still struggling with his gloves, shot straight at goal from the center spot. Both Daily Nation and Standard newspapers reported the goal as having been scored within 5 seconds of the referee kicking off the game. That goal settled the game and both clubs would qualify for the National League playoffs where Breweries exacted their revenge by eliminating Gor Mahia in the semi-finals, 2-0.

William "Chege" Ouma, fastest goal in Kenyan football?

The next few years saw Gor Mahia dominate the Brewers, winning the next 6 games in a row between 1973 and 1975, a run that included a Peter Ouma and John Chore inspired hattricks as Gor thumped them 3-2 twice in 1973, as well as a 4-1 thumping in the same year that was to be their biggest win against the Brewers in the 70s.

The 80s saw the Brewers determined to shackle Gor Mahia and they began the decade by holding Gor Mahia to a 1-1 draw and then thumping K’Ogalo 5-1 in the second leg of the 1980 season. This is the Brewers biggest win ever over Gor Mahia. Gor Mahia exacted revenge the following year by beating the Brewers 4-1 though they would later suffer three consecutive defeats between  1982 and 1983.

Players and Goals
Some of the top Gor Mahia players have always struggled in this fixture and one would be surprised to learn that leading all time scorers Hesbon Omollo and Allan Thigo only scored once in competitive fixtures against Tusker (though Omollo’s goal was massive in taking Gor Mahia to the 1986 Moi Golden Cup final). Other leading scorers Sammy Onyango “Jogoo” , Peter Dawo and Danny Sserunkuma only found the back of the net  twice but not to be deterred was John Chore “piki piki” who scored 7 times against the Brewers including being one of two Gor Mahia players to register a hattrick against Tusker in competitive games. Other players who have found joy in this fixture include George Onyango “Fundi”, Michael Olunga, Patrick Oyiengo and Allan Odhiambo.  The following list illustrate Gor Mahia’s all time leading scorers against Tusker.

Before Olunga scored a double last year in the Top 8 semi finals, one had to go all the way back to 1995 to find the last time a K’Ogalo player scored a double against Tusker, Pius Wamaya scoring twice in a 4-0 rout in the league. Even more rare is a hattrick where you have to go way back to 1973 when John Chore was still banging in the goals! The following players have scored Hattricks or doubles against Tusker.

Olunga - Kagere Partnership - The Best Ever for Gor Mahia?

Well, it is now probably official that Gor Mahia will be without Michael Olunga and Meddie Kagere for the 2016 season and have quickly moved to replace them with Jacob Keli and Rwandese Jacques Tusiyenge. But will the two be missed by the club? Gor Mahia fans tend to live by the slogan “no one is bigger than the club” and always believe replacements are readily available. Sometimes rightly so, like when Olunga replaced Danny, but at times it could be a miss…like the years it took to replace Peter Dawo. Olunga and Kagere scored a whooping 57 goals between in 2015 and I have been wondering how easy it is to replicate that, so I took a step down memory lane to see how lethal other strike partnerships were. Were they for example more prolific than Peter Dawo and Sammy Onyango “Jogoo” in 1987, Gor most successful year to date? Or the partnerships between the legendary goal getter of the 80s Hesbone Omollo and whoever he partnered with during those glory days of the 80s?

In fact they were. Dawo and Jogoo scored 47 goals in all competitions between them (31 goals in the league) in 1987 while Omollo and Hamisi managed 33 in 1983. It is only in the league where Hesbone Omollo / Gedion Hamisi and George Yoga / Nahashon Oluoch partnerships outscored the Olunga and Kagere partnership. The tables below shows just how prolific this combination was.

*It is worth noting that in 1979 George Yoga “Best” and Nahashon Oluoch Lule scored 38 goals between them but I do not have the full stats of that season and the rest of the 70s yet.

Olunga in the League

While I still don’t have the complete records from the 70s, it is well understood that Maurice Ouma “Sonyi” is the club’s leading scorer in a league season with 26 goals in 1976. I have therefore attempted to see where Olunga’s 19 league goals would place him with the other illustrious scorers of the 80s and 90s. He ties Peter Dawo’s 19 league goals in 1987 but apart from Sonyi, who else is up there with him? The following table illustrates.

It is thus safe to say that the club will surely miss the Olunga - Kagere partnership. Hopefully a successful season from Keli, Tuyisenge, Agwanda, George Odhiambo or whoever else will lead the hunt for goals will make the K'Ogalo faithful forget the two.

The Green Army Set to Soldier On Against the Soldiers

This Sunday K’ogalo and its faithful followers The Green Army, make the 200 kilometers road trip to the agri-industrial town of Nakuru to face their only title challengers, Ulinzi Stars. By the end of 90 minutes they might be making the return trip having been confirmed the 2015 league champions. Indeed a win or draw will see them confirmed champions while a win for Ulinzi will see them retain a slim mathematical chance of upsetting the defending champions to the finish line. Gor Mahia has a 12 point lead over Ulinzi with a game in hand and so it will take something special, Gor Mahia losing all their remaining matches with Ulinzi winning all of theirs, for anyone to entertain the thought of Gor bottling it. Everyone knows it will take a miracle for that to happen.

With the championship more or less secured, what incentive is there for the Green Army? For K’ogalo the ambition is now to finish the league unbeaten and with Tusker wobbling, Sofapaka weakened and having dispatched off Bandari the last time out in Mombasa, Ulinzi Stars remain the only side perceived as a threat to this unbeaten run. Indeed over the last couple of years, actually since the title run-in in 2010, there has been no love lost between the soldiers and the green army.  For the players and the technical bench, it is an opportunity to etch their names alongside the great Gor Mahia teams of the mid 80s – something that older fans will however have reservations about.  And having already hit the 20 goals margin for Gor Mahia this season (15 in the league and 5 in CECAFA), Michael Olunga will be itching to not only challenge for the golden boot but stake his claim to be among the best strikers the club has seen – again, something that older fans will have reservations about.

Encounters between the two sides have been tense and often physical affairs, with very few goals flying in. There have only been 19 goals in 15 league games between the two sides since 2008, with Gor netting 12 of those. Only Tusker and Sofapaka have prevented K’Ogalo from scoring more in the league (teams that have played more than 10 games) in this period.  You have to go back to 23 August 2009 to witness the last time any of these teams scored more than 2 goals against each in any competition,  a George Odhiambo “Blackberry”  double inspiring Gor to a 4-2 win at Afraha.  Last season Rama Salim and David Owino ensured that Gor won this fixture 2-1 so it is a ground that they are comfortable on, having already scored 4 past Chemelil Sugar FC at the beginning of this second leg. During this time Gor has won 40% of their league matches against Ulinzi (6 games) and lost 4 with 5 others ending in draws. Also no team has done a double over the other in a season in this period, a status Gor will be keen to see changed and one that Ulinzi will want to preserve.

So even as Gor marches to its third league trophy in succession (a feat only managed by Ulinzi in modern times since the indomitable AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia teams of the 80s), there will be all to play for and Afraha will be a battle ground come Sunday.

A Hatrick of Perfect Starts as Olunga, Abondo joins the Double Boys

The Kenyan Premier League finally kicked off over the weekend despite the stalemate dogging KPL and FKF over the number of teams to be in the league. Having already played two competitive games, K’ogalo began their title defense with a 4-2 victory over Mathare United courtesy of a brace each by the returning boy Ali Abondo and new signing Michael Olunga. A few years began there was talk that Gor Mahia rarely won their first league games, a jinx that was seemingly broken in 2012 with a 2-0 win over Thika. I have checked the records and can indeed confirm that between between 2003 and 2012, Gor had indeed found it difficult to win their opening games having won only once, beating Homegrown 4-2. Since 2012, the Victory against the slum boys was our 3rd consecutive opening day victory. The following are our opening day results over the last 10 years.

2005 Lost to Kangemi United 1-2
2006 Drew with Securicor 1-1
2007 Won against Homegrown 4-2
2008  Lost to KCB 0-1
2009 Lost to Ulinzi 0-1
2010 Drew with Western Stima 0-0
2011 Lost to Rangers 3-0
2012 Won against Thika 0-2
2013 Won against Sofapaka 1-0
2014 Won against City Stars 2-0
2015 Won against Mathare United 4-2

As you can see from the results over the year, this result also matched our biggest opening day victory which was way back in 2007.

Seeing two players net a brace each also got me checking on the last game we had two players each score two goals. Well there have not been many games we have scored more than 4 goals and one would therefore have to look beyond 2008 for two doubles in a league game. Unfortunately my records for goal scorers are not comprehensive pre-2008. However in 2013 both Dan Sserenkuma and Kevin Omondi Ade helped themselves to two apiece in the 6-0 walloping of Shabana during a FKF GOTv Shield match. Ali Abondo and Michael Olunga however joins a select club of the double boys and since 2008, bringing the number of the double boys to 9. The members of this club are

  1. Danny Sserenkuma (8)
  2. Duncan Owiti (3)
  3. Rama Salim (2)
  4. George Odhiambo Blackberry (2)
  5. Kevin Omondi (2)
